Eastern Regional Hospital gets a newly constructed Multipurpose NICU Complex donated by Nana Owiredu Wadie (I).

The Nkosuohene of Kwahu Nkwatia also the Founder of Kabaka Foundation Nana Owiredu Wadie (I)has constructed and handed over a multipurpose Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Complex to the Eastern Regional Health Directorate on Thursday September 28th , 2023.

The newly constructed NICU Unit is made up of 4 components.

The Yaa Boatemma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which has 4 units thus a High dependency, low dependency, stable and isolation ward will provide 80 bed capacity.

The NOW 1 Kangaroo Mother Care Excellence Centre has 2 units this the inpatient adaptation ward has a 10 bed capacity whiles the outpatient unit will take 30 capacity.

The Yaa Boatemma Conference Centre can take up to 50 people at a time whiles the Opanyin Kwame Wadie Mother Hostel is a 40 bed capacity facility.

Commissioning the project at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua to celebrate his birthday, Nana Owiredu Wadie I , said “when it came to my attention in last 2022 that 31 infants per every 1,000 life birth die in Ghana due to the inadequate modern facilities for children I became very worried and it was major concern to me so I decided to collaborate with the Ghana Health Service in the Eastern region to tackle this dilemma in a more holistic approach and by the grace of God we are here to mark the handing of the NICU Unit I promised to build for this hospital”

” As today also mark my birthday and being the founder of Kabaka Foundation we will continue our charity work therefore we will take care and pay the bills of all mothers at the Children ward who have difficulty paying their bill”

Nana Owiredu Wadie(I) however noted that the newly constructed NICU Unit in the Eastern Regional hospital be named after Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III the Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area.

Representing the Director General of Ghana Health Service was Dr. Ebo Hammond who is the Director of Health Administration and Support Services-GHS commended Nana Owiredu Wadie I for his collaboration with the Ghana Health Service to put up an edifice for the vulnerable children in the Eastern region and beyond.

Dr. Ebo Hammond highlighted the importance of the NICU Unit in every hospital to saving lives of stillbirth babies.

He said Eastern region records 7.8 neonatal deaths out of every 1000 live births making it high above national rate therefore the new facility will save more lives in the region.

The Medical Director of Eastern Regional Hospital Dr.Akoto Ampaw stated that demand for NICU services keeps increasing over the years at the hospital.

According to him, 2,617 admissions at NICU were recorded last year out of 5,175 deliveries through 2020 to 5,550 live births last year creating overcrowding in the old NICU facility.

Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong regretted that the Region has lost to many children due to inadequate NICU care .He therefore commended Nana Owiredu Wadie for being a beacon of hope for the future.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Director of Health Dr. Winfred Ofosu said having a modern NICU Unit for the first time in a regional hospital in the Eastern region will improve access to new born care therefore mothers and families will not have to go through difficulties of transporting preterm babies over long distances going to Kole-bu or Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Therefore he further noted that having the NICU Unit put up by Nana Owiredu Wadie I will help save new borns and also help reduce Maternal deaths.
